The Wayne High Speech Team placed fourth overall in the Mid State Conference meet that was held recently at Battle Creek High School.
“The Mid State Conference has a reputation for being one of the top conferences for speech in Nebraska,” coach Dwaine Spieker said. “In fact, this might have been our toughest competition of the year. We won eight medals, but so many other events of ours were very close to making finals as well. On the whole, I was happy with how the kids represented their school and town.”
Two Wayne High entires came home as conference champions, as Marta Pulfer earned top honors in Informative Speaking, while the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Nate Burrows, Megan Keiser, Grace Heithold, Claire Barnes and Jack Osnes earned the gold medal. Both were tabbed as part of the Mid State Conference All-Conference Speech Team.
Runner-up finishes were earned by Osnes in Poetry and Marcella Jurotich in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Other medalists included Burrows with a sixth in Entertainment Speaking, Sarah Wibben with a fourth in Humorous Speaking, Savannah Leseberg with a fourth in Persuasive Speaking and Emily Matthes with a third in Informative Speaking.
The Wayne High speech team will compete in its final regular-season event this Saturday in Norfolk before competing in districts on Monday, March 13 at Columbus Lakeview High School.
