The Wayne High speech team just missed out on a district runner-up trophy, settling for third place in the B-4 district speech meet Monday at Columbus Lakeview.
Wayne High will send three entries into the state speech meet next week in Kearney, two of them district champions.
The Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Nathan Burrows, Grace Heithold, Jack Osnes, Claire Barnes and Megan Keiser earned a district championship. Also taking first was Marcella Jurotich for her effort in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Wayne’s third state qualifier was Marta Pulfer, who finished third in Informative Speaking.
Also scoring for Wayne were the following entries:
Humorous Speaking: Maura Loberg, 5th; Sarah Wibben, 6th.
Informative Speaking: Emily Matthes, 5th.
Entertainment Speaking: Nate Burrows, 5th.
Serious Speaking: Claire Barnes, 5th.
Oral Interpretation of Drama: Aidan Consoli, RJ Liska, Emily Matthes and Shanda Lambert, 5th.
Columbus Lakeview won the district title with 410 points, with Milford finishing second with 276. Wayne was third with 265 points. Each Wayne High entry receivedat least one superior rating in their performance, according to coach Dwaine Spieker.
The Class C-1 division of the Nebraska State Speech Championships will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 23 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
