The Wayne High varsity and JV speech teams came away with some high finishes during the Hartington High/Hartington Cedar Catholic Invitational on Saturday.

In varsity action, Wayne finished fourth out of 17 teams and won three events

Megan Keiser was a double winner, taking first in Poetry and Humorous Prose. Liz Junck’s first varsity medal was also a first-place finish, as she claimed the Persuasive category.

Grace Heithold finished fourth in Poetry, Halie Chinn was fifth in Informative and Jaci Torres placed sixth in Serious.

The JV team placed seventh overall and were led by Chris Cruz, who placed third in Serious Prose. Walker Hochstein was fourth in Entertainment, Ruben Vega finished fourth in Extemporaneous, Liam Spieker was fifth in Homorous Prose and the Duet Acting team of Juan Hernandez and Christopher Archer placed sixth.

The public is invited to the annual Wayne Home Show and Parents’ Day is set for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Wayne High School. The team will be introduced in the lecture hall, with individual and group performances taking place in the school afterward.

"With virtually all of our speech contests being held at competitions hosted by other schools in other towns, the Home Show is our way of performing solely for the Wayne community," coach Dwaine Spieker said.

"Speech meets are sometimes not the most fan-friendly environments, especially for people who have never been to a speech event before," he continued. "So we have created this event to make it easier for families and friends to watch our performances. We have a young team, but one that also enjoys strong senior leadership. It's the best of both worlds."

While photography and videotaping are not allowed at the typical speech meet, they are encouraged at the Home Show. Speakers will not only give their speeches, but also briefly discuss the creation of their programs.

The event will be followed by a potluck lunch for speech team parents, team members, and volunteers.

Other Wayne High speech events on the schedule include:
— Friday, Feb. 9 at Wakefield
— Saturday, Feb. 17 at Wisner
— Saturday, Feb. 24, Mid-State Conference at Battle Creek
— Saturday, March 3 at Norfolk
— Monday, March 12 Districts at Columbus Lakeview.
